The benefits of regular activity have been studied for years and as a result are well documented, after a comprehensive review of research related to physical activity and health improvements, and after establishing direct link released the 2008 Physical Activities Guidelines, The first comprehensive guidelines on physical activity ever to be issued by the U.S. government, These guidelines include a list of major benefits proven by research regarding physical activity, including stating even some physical activity is better than none at all.
Some of these benefits include:
- Reduced risk of many adverse health conditions including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure.
- Weight gain prevention
- Decreased anxiety and depression
- Better cognitive function
Most health benefits occur with at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity physical activity, like a brisk walk or bike ride, additional benefits occur with more frequent physical activity, longer duration and/or through higher intensity.
Both aerobic (Cardio) and muscle-strengthening (resistance) activities are beneficial and positive effects can occur for children, young adults, and older adults as well.
